Bolometer

A bolometer is a thermal radiation detector that measures incoming electromagnetic power by converting it into a temperature change, making it useful for sensitive measurements across infrared, microwave, and other spectral bands. Radiation is absorbed by a thermally isolated element, raising its temperature; a temperature-dependent resistor, such as a thermistor or superconducting transition-edge sensor, then produces a measurable change in electrical resistance. The detector’s thermal conductance, heat capacity, operating temperature, and electrical readout determine its sensitivity and response speed. In engineering, bolometers support astronomical instruments, thermal imaging, spectroscopy, and materials characterization, where detecting weak radiation can reveal temperature, composition, or energy distributions.
