Critical Point Elevation

Critical point elevation is the upward shift of a substance’s or mixture’s critical temperature or pressure, the conditions at which distinct liquid and vapor phases cease to coexist. In mixtures, changes in composition and intermolecular forces alter phase equilibrium and chemical potential, shifting the liquid–vapor boundary and changing the critical point. Engineers analyze this behavior with equations of state and phase diagrams to predict supercritical conditions, where fluid properties can be tuned between gas-like transport and liquid-like solvating power. These predictions support the design of separation processes, chemical reactors, heat-transfer systems, and other technologies that use supercritical fluids.

Freezing Point Depression and Boiling Point Elevation

Boiling Point Elevation The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which its vapor pressure is equal to ambient atmospheric pressure. Since the vapor pressure of a solution is lowered due to the presence of nonvolatile solutes, it stands to reason that the solution’s boiling point will subsequently be increased. Vapor pressure increases with temperature, and so a solution will require a higher temperature than will pure solvent to achieve any given vapor pressure, including one...

Freezing Point Depression and Boiling Point Elevation

When a non-volatile solute is added to a pure solvent, it results in the lowering of the freezing point of the solvent. This phenomenon is called freezing point depression. The extent to which the freezing point is lowered depends on the molality of the solute -the number of moles of solute per kilogram of solvent and the cryoscopic constant of the solvent. From the plot of chemical potential, μ, against temperature, it is evident that the μ of both solid and liquid solvents decrease with...

Elevation of Intermediate Points on Vertical Curves

2025

Vertical curves are essential in roadway design because they provide smooth transitions between varying roadway grades. Designing vertical curves involves calculating intermediate elevations and identifying the curve's highest or lowest point, which is essential for optimal roadway performance.Intermediate elevations on a vertical curve are determined using the tangent offset method. This method considers the initial elevation at the start of the curve, the grades, and the curve's geometry. The...

Trabecular Meshwork Response to Pressure Elevation in the Living Human Eye

Trabecular meshwork (TM) migration into Schlemm’s canal space can be induced by acute pressure elevation by ophthalmodynamometer, and observed by spectral domain optical coherence tomography. The goal of this method is to quantify the morphometric response of the living outflow tract to acute pressure elevation in living tissues in situ.
