Elongation At Break

Elongation at break is a tensile material property that quantifies how much a specimen stretches before it fractures, typically reported as the percentage increase in length relative to its original gauge length. During a tensile test, controlled loading produces deformation, and the measured strain at failure provides a direct indication of ductility and deformation capacity. In engineering, elongation at break helps compare metals, polymers, and composites, guide material selection, and assess forming behavior, toughness, and quality consistency. Together with strength and modulus data, it supports component design and failure analysis where avoiding brittle fracture is important.

Transcription Elongation Factors

2020

Transcription elongation is a dynamic process that alters depending upon the sequence heterogeneity of the DNA being transcribed. Hence, it is not surprising that the elongation complex's composition also varies along the way while transcribing a gene. The transcription elongation is regulated via pausing of RNA polymerase on several occasions during transcription. In bacteria, these halts are necessary because the transcription of DNA into mRNA is coupled to the translation of that mRNA into a...

The “Break-Even” Point

The macroeconomic consumption function illustrates the relationship between aggregate consumption (C) and national income (Y). It is typically expressed as:C = a + bYwhere a denotes autonomous consumption—expenditures that occur regardless of income—and b, the marginal propensity to consume (MPC), indicates the fraction of additional income that is spent. The break-even point occurs where:C = YSolving for income yields the break-even level of national income:At this level, the entire output...

Novel Metrics to Characterize Embryonic Elongation of the Nematode Caenorhabditis elegans

2016

Here we detail protocols specifically designed to monitor morphogenic defects that occur during early and late phases of embryonic elongation of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Ultimately, these protocols are designed to identify genes that regulate these phases and to characterize their differential requirements along the antero-posterior axis of the embryo.

Fixing Double-strand Breaks

2020

The double-stranded structure of DNA has two major advantages. First, it serves as a safe repository of genetic information where one strand serves as the back-up in case the other strand is damaged. Second, the double-helical structure can be wrapped around proteins called histones to form nucleosomes, which can then be tightly wound to form chromosomes. This way, DNA chains up to 2 inches long can be contained within microscopic structures in a cell. A double-stranded break not only damages...
