Field Emission Properties

Field emission properties describe how readily electrons escape from a solid surface under a strong electric field, an important behavior in electronic and vacuum engineering. When the field bends the surface potential barrier sufficiently, electrons tunnel through it rather than gaining enough energy to overcome the barrier thermally; emission depends on factors such as electric-field strength, work function, surface geometry, and material composition. Measuring current–voltage characteristics and analyzing Fowler–Nordheim behavior helps evaluate emitter performance, stability, and operating conditions. These properties support the design of field-emission cathodes for vacuum microelectronics, electron sources, displays, sensors, and high-resolution imaging systems.

Properties of Electric Field Lines

2026

The definition of electric field lines greatly eases the visualization of electric fields, a vector field, especially in the presence of many charges. The one-to-one correspondence between the electric field and the electric field lines necessitates that the field lines follow some rules. For one, the electric field of a positive charge must originate from it. That is because its electric field points away from it. Moreover, since the magnitude of the field asymptotes to zero at infinity, the...

Here we present a protocol to estimate material and surface optical properties using the photoacoustic effect combined with total internal reflection. This technique evanescent field-based photoacoustics can be used to create a photoacoustic metrology system to estimate materials' thicknesses, bulk and thin film refractive indices, and explore their optical properties.

Emission Spectra

2020

When solids, liquids, or condensed gases are heated sufficiently, they radiate some of the excess energy as light. Photons produced in this manner have a range of energies, and thereby produce a continuous spectrum in which an unbroken series of wavelengths is present. In contrast to continuous spectra, light can also occur as discrete or line spectra having very narrow linewidths interspersed throughout the spectral regions. Exciting a gas at low partial pressure using an electrical current,...
