Metal Oxide Semiconductor Fet

A metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) is a voltage-controlled semiconductor device that switches or amplifies electrical signals, making it a fundamental building block of modern electronics. It operates by applying a voltage to an insulated gate, which creates or suppresses a conductive channel between the source and drain terminals and thereby controls current flow. MOSFETs are used in digital logic, memory, power conversion, and analog circuits because they offer fast switching, high input impedance, and low power consumption at the gate. Understanding their structure and behavior supports the design of integrated circuits, sensors, processors, and energy-efficient electronic systems.

Metal-Semiconductor Junctions

The contact of metal and semiconductor can lead to the formation of a junction with either Schottky or Ohmic behavior. Schottky Barriers Schottky barriers arise when a metal with a work function (Φm) contacts a semiconductor with a different work function (Φs). Initially, electrons transfer until the Fermi levels of the metal and semiconductor align at equilibrium. For instance, if Φm > Φs, the semiconductor Fermi level is higher than the metal's before contact. The semiconductor's...

Source: Derek Wilson, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Semiconductors are materials whose ability to conduct an electrical current depends strongly on their temperature and level of impurity. The most common type of semiconductor material is crystalline silicon. Most pure semiconductors are not outstanding conductors; to improve conductivity, a pure semiconductor is often combined or "doped" with an...

Biasing of Metal-Semiconductor Junctions

2024

Biasing metal-semiconductor junctions involves applying a voltage across the junction. Specifically, the metal is connected to a voltage source, while the semiconductor is grounded. This technique is essential for controlling the direction and magnitude of current flow in electronic devices, including diodes, transistors, and photovoltaic cells. In Schottky junctions, where the semiconductor is n-type, applying a positive voltage to the metal relative to the semiconductor reduces its Fermi...
