Mobile Device Imaging

Mobile device imaging is the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of visual information using smartphones or other portable connected devices. In a typical system, light passes through a lens onto an image sensor, which converts photons into electronic signals; onboard processors then apply calibration, compression, enhancement, and storage before images are shared or analyzed. In engineering, these capabilities support field inspection, dimensional documentation, equipment monitoring, and remote collaboration, while computational imaging and improved sensors can extend measurement and diagnostic value beyond basic photography.

A simple microfluidic device has been developed to perform anesthetic free in vivo imaging of C. elegans, intact Drosophila larvae and zebrafish larvae. The device utilizes a deformable PDMS membrane to immobilize these model organisms in order to perform time lapse imaging of numerous processes such as heart beat, cell division and sub-cellular neuronal transport. We demonstrate the use of this device and show examples of different types of data collected from different model systems.

Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay (EMSA)

2023

The electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) is a biochemical procedure used to elucidate binding between proteins and nucleic acids. In this assay a radiolabeled nucleic acid and test protein are mixed. Binding is determined via gel electrophoresis which separates components based on mass, charge, and conformation. This video shows the concepts of EMSA and a general procedure, including gel and protein preparation, binding, electrophoresis, and detection. Applications covered in this video...

2024

As consumers increasingly rely on smartphones and other mobile devices for browsing, communication, and shopping, mobile marketing has become essential in today's digital world. Brands must adjust their strategies to engage users where they spend most of their time, which is on mobile screens. Understanding mobile user behavior is crucial for successful mobile marketing. Mobile users typically interact with their devices briefly and frequently throughout the day. They prefer content that is...

A Microfluidic Device for Real-Time Imaging and Pressure Tracking During Biofilm Formation

2026

Source: Kurz, D. L., et al. Microfluidic Platform to Study Bioclogging in Porous Media. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)The video demonstrates the use of a microfluidic device to study biofilm formation. A bacterial suspension is introduced into the microchannel, followed by incubation to allow biofilm development. Flow is then resumed, and pressure monitoring along with imaging is used to detect biofilm formation and pore blockage over time.
