Parallel Strand Lumber

Parallel strand lumber (PSL) is an engineered wood product made from long, narrow wood strands arranged parallel to one another and bonded under pressure, providing predictable strength for structural engineering. During manufacturing, strands are coated with adhesive, aligned in the primary load-bearing direction, and compressed into large, uniform members; this process distributes natural defects and creates consistent mechanical performance. PSL is used for beams, columns, headers, and other components that carry substantial loads in residential, commercial, and industrial construction. Its dimensional stability and efficient use of wood resources support reliable design while reducing dependence on large, solid-sawn timbers.

Lumber

Lumber is derived from logs which are harvested, debarked, and processed into long pieces with a rectangular cross-section. The transformation of logs into lumber involves multiple steps, beginning with an automated saw that slices the log into slabs. These slabs are then transported via a conveyor belt to smaller saws, where they are cut into square-edged pieces of specific widths. Initially, the surfaces of these lumber pieces are rough, and their dimensions may vary slightly from one end to...

Lumber Defects

Lumber defects, which can affect both the appearance and structural integrity of wood, include a variety of growth and manufacturing flaws. Growth defects such as knots and knotholes occur where branches were once attached to the tree trunk, with knotholes forming when these knots fall out. Other natural defects include decay and insect damage, which compromise the wood's strength and durability. Shakes are minor fractures that run along or across the wood's annual rings, while wane is...

Structural Properties and Dimensions of Lumber

Wood's structural properties derive from fibers aligned along the tree's length, contributing significantly to its mechanical strength. Wood exhibits up to twenty times greater tensile strength along these fibers compared to across them, and generally shows better performance under compression than tension. The length of fibers varies, with hardwoods having fibers around one twenty-fifth inch long and softwoods ranging from one-eighth to one-third inch. The strength characteristics of wood are...

Series and Parallel Resistors

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN This experiment demonstrates how current is distributed in resistors connected in series or parallel, and thus describes how to calculate the total "effective" resistance. Using Ohm's law, it possible to convert between the voltage and current through a resistance, if the resistance is known. For two resistors connected in series, (meaning that they are wired one after the...

Strand-Specific Analysis of Proteins at Replicating DNA Strands by Enrichment and Sequencing of Protein-Associated Nascent DNA Method

2025

Enrichment and sequencing of protein-associated nascent DNA (eSPAN) was developed to detect the relative abundance of a chromatin-associated protein on two replicating DNA strands, thereby revealing molecular insight into chromatin replication and its coupled processes. This protocol describes eSPAN procedures in yeast and mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells.
