Plastic Moment

Plastic moment is the bending moment at which a structural cross section has fully yielded, marking its ultimate idealized flexural resistance in plastic analysis. As an applied load increases, stress spreads beyond the elastic limit until the entire section reaches the material’s yield strength; the resulting capacity is calculated from the yield strength and plastic section modulus, commonly expressed as Mp = fyZp. In steel engineering, this behavior forms a plastic hinge that permits rotation with little additional moment, allowing internal force redistribution before collapse. Plastic moment concepts support limit-state design, load-capacity assessment, and evaluation of beams and frames under severe loading.

Plasticity

Plasticity is the property where an object loses its elasticity and undergoes irreversible deformation, even after the deformation forces are eliminated. If a material deforms irreversibly without increasing stress or load, then this is called ideal plasticity. For example, when a force is applied to an aluminum rod, it changes its shape, but it does not return to its original shape once the force is removed. Plastic deformation or ductility is thus a permanent deformation or change in the...

Plasticizers

2024

Water-reducers, or plasticizers, are chemical admixtures used in concrete to improve strength and workability. These additives reduce the water-cement ratio without compromising workability, lower the cement content while maintaining the same workability, or increase workability to assist concrete placement in inaccessible areas. Plasticizers function by using surface-active agents to create repulsive electrostatic forces between cement particles. This dispersion enhances the concrete's...

Microplastics act as vector of potentially toxic organic contaminants with unpredictable effects. This protocol describes an alternative methodology for assessing the levels of organochlorine pesticides adsorbed on plastic pellets and identifying the polymer chemical structure. The focus is on pressurized fluid extraction and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

Moment-Area Theorems

The Moment-Area Theorem is crucial in structural engineering for analyzing beam bending, particularly in applications like building floor supports. This theorem utilizes the geometric properties of the elastic curve, which depicts how a beam deforms under load, to simplify the calculations of deflections and slopes. The theorem is divided into two parts. The first part connects the angle between tangents at any two points on the beam's elastic curve to the area under a curve derived by plotting...

Moment of Inertia

The comparability between linear and angular velocities, linear and angular accelerations, and the kinematic equations of translational and rotational motion can be extended to the concept of inertia. If a rigid body is rotating about an axis but is not in translational motion, its translational kinetic energy is zero. However, since each particle undergoes rotational motion, it possesses non-zero velocity and kinetic energy. Thus, the kinetic energy of the rigid body, which is the sum of the...
