Centroid

A centroid is the geometric center of a shape or region, defined as the average location of its points and used to represent distributed geometry in analysis. For a uniform lamina, its coordinates are calculated as area-weighted averages through first moments of area, while integration handles curved regions and symmetry can simplify the calculation. In engineering, centroids help locate neutral axes, determine bending behavior, evaluate beam cross-sections, and establish where an idealized resultant load acts. Although related to the center of mass, a centroid describes geometry alone and coincides with the center of mass only when density is uniform.

Centroid of a Body

2025

The centroid is an important concept in engineering, physics, and mechanics. It is the geometric center of a body. It always lies within the body except in cases with holes or cavities. When the material that a body is composed of is uniform or homogeneous, the centroid coincides with its center of mass or the center of gravity. For a homogeneous body with constant density, the centroid can usually be found using equations representing a balance of the moments of the body's volume. If the...

Centroid for the Paraboloid of Revolution

2023

The paraboloid of revolution is an axially symmetric surface generated by rotating a parabola around its axis. This shape has several applications in mechanical engineering due to its advantageous structural properties, such as strength against stress concentration points and rotational symmetry. The centroid for the paraboloid of revolution is the point where all the mass of the paraboloid is concentrated. This centroid is important for engineering applications, as it determines how forces are...

Centroid of a Body: Problem Solving

2025

The centroid of a body is a crucial concept in engineering and physics. Finding the centroid of a body can help determine its stability, its balance point, and even its design. In this context, consider a thin wire bent in the form of a quarter circular arc. Polar coordinates are used to calculate the centroid. The wire is first divided into small differential elements of a length equal to the radius multiplied by the differential angle. The x-coordinates and y-coordinates of each element's...

The traditional soil-sampling procedure determines the number of soil samples arbitrarily. Here, we provide a simple yet efficient clustered soil-sampling design to demonstrate soil spatial heterogeneity and quantitatively determine the number of soil samples required and the associated sampling accuracy.

Stability of Floating Vessels

Source: Alexander S Rattner and Kevin Rao Li Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The objective of this experiment is to demonstrate the phenomenon of stability of floating vessels - the ability to self-right when rolled over to the side by some external force. Careful design of hull shapes and internal mass distribution enables seagoing vessels to be stable with low drafts (submerged depth of hull), improving vessel...
