Polymer Electrolyte Film

Polymer electrolyte films are thin, solid or gel-like materials that conduct ions through a polymer matrix, providing an alternative to liquid electrolytes in engineered electrochemical devices. Their performance depends on the dissolution and transport of an ionic salt within the polymer, where segmental motion of polymer chains creates pathways for ion migration while the film maintains physical integrity. These films support flexible batteries, fuel cells, electrochemical sensors, and electrochromic devices, and their tunable composition, thickness, mechanical properties, and conductivity help engineers balance energy storage, safety, flexibility, and manufacturing requirements.

We describe a method for the fabrication of large-area (up to 13 cm diameter) and ultrathin (as thin as 8 nm) polymer films. Instead of using a sacrificial interlayer to delaminate the film from its substrate, we use a self-limiting surface treatment suitable for arbitrarily large areas.

Electrochemistry Electrochemistry is a branch of chemistry that describes and measures the relationship between electrical energy and a chemical change. Electrochemical reactions involve the movement of electrons from one species to another. If the reaction is spontaneous, it can result in a generated current. If the reaction is not spontaneous, it can be driven by the application of current. In electrochemistry, the key reaction is the oxidation-reduction reaction, called a redox reaction. The...

Source: Smaa Koraym at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA Electrolytic CellsExpand In this experiment, you will be assembling an electrolytic cell to perform electroplating. An electrolytic cell contains an anode and cathode connected by a power source, which drives the nonspontaneous redox reaction in the cell. When the anode material is oxidized, the ions travel to the cathode, where they are reduced and plated. In the case of this experiment, the electrolytic cell contains a copper anode...
