Quantum Interference

Quantum interference is a quantum phenomenon in which probability amplitudes associated with alternative paths combine, producing outcomes that differ from classical probability addition. When particles or quantum states remain coherent, their wavefunction amplitudes acquire relative phases and interfere constructively or destructively, increasing or suppressing the likelihood of measuring particular results. In engineering, this principle underlies interferometers that detect tiny changes in phase, path length, or environmental conditions, and supports the design of quantum sensors and communication systems. Controlling coherence and unwanted interactions is therefore essential for reliable quantum devices, while interference remains a key resource for quantum information processing and precision measurement.

It is said that the energy of an electron in an atom is quantized; that is, it can be equal only to certain specific values and can jump from one energy level to another but not transition smoothly or stay between these levels. The energy levels are labeled with an n value, where n = 1, 2, 3, etc. Generally speaking, the energy of an electron in an atom is greater for greater values of n. This number, n, is referred to as the principal quantum number. The principal quantum number defines the...

The gradient echo memory is a protocol for storing optical quantum states of light in atomic ensembles. Quantum memory is a key element of a quantum repeater, which can extend the range of quantum key distribution. We outline the operation of the scheme when implemented in a 3-level atomic ensemble.

Interference is a characteristic phenomenon exhibited by waves. When two electromagnetic waves interact with their peaks and troughs coinciding, a resulting wave with enhanced amplitude is produced. This is known as constructive interference. In this case, the two waves interacting are in phase with each other. Alternatively, if the two waves coincide and interact in a way such that the trough of one wave coincides with the peak of the other (in an out of phase manner), the resultant wave will...
