Resonant Excitation

Resonant excitation is the amplification of a system’s response when an external periodic force operates near one of the system’s natural frequencies. At this condition, each cycle of applied energy reinforces the system’s motion, producing a large amplitude that depends on damping, stiffness, mass, and the frequency relationship between the force and the structure. Engineers use resonant excitation in vibration testing, frequency-response analysis, mechanical and electrical resonators, and sensing technologies, where resonance can improve sensitivity or selectively amplify signals. Conversely, identifying resonance helps engineers prevent excessive vibration, fatigue, noise, and structural failure in machines, vehicles, buildings, and other engineered systems.

Resonant excitation of a single self-assembled quantum dot can be achieved using an excitation mode orthogonal to the fluorescence collection mode. We demonstrate a method using the waveguide and Fabry-Perot modes of a planar microcavity surrounding the quantum dots. The method allows complete freedom in the detection polarization.

The Lewis structure of a nitrite anion (NO2−) may actually be drawn in two different ways, distinguished by the locations of the N-O and N=O bonds. If nitrite ions do indeed contain a single and a double bond, the two bond lengths are expected to be different. A double bond between two atoms is shorter (and stronger) than a single bond between the same two atoms. However, experiments show that both N–O bonds in NO2− have the same strength and length, and are identical in all other...
