Solution Casting

Solution casting is a materials-processing method that forms a solid film or coating by spreading a solution containing a dissolved material and removing its solvent. In a typical process, a polymer or other film-forming component dissolves in a volatile solvent, the solution is deposited onto a level substrate, and controlled evaporation leaves a continuous solid layer. Engineers use solution casting to produce polymer films, coatings, membranes, and composite materials with tailored thickness and composition. Solvent choice, concentration, drying temperature, and evaporation rate influence uniformity, porosity, surface quality, and mechanical performance, making the method valuable for laboratory fabrication and functional material development.
