Wicking Test

A wicking test is an engineering method for measuring how a liquid spreads through or rises within a porous material, providing insight into fluid transport and material performance. During the test, one edge or surface contacts a liquid, and capillary pressure draws the fluid through interconnected pores; the measured height, distance, or absorption rate depends on pore structure, surface tension, viscosity, and gravity. Engineers use wicking tests to evaluate textiles, paper, filters, absorbent products, and other porous materials. The results support material selection, quality control, and the design of systems that require controlled liquid uptake or distribution.

2017

An experimental method to measure geometrical parameters and the apparent advancing contact angles describing capillary wicking in unidirectional synthetic and natural fabrics is proposed. These parameters are mandatory for the determination of the capillary pressures that must be taken into account for liquid composite molding (LCM) applications.

We describe the use of micro-thermocouples to estimate local temperature gradients in steady laminar boundary layer diffusion flames. By extension of the Reynolds Analogy, local temperature gradients can be further used to estimate the local mass burning rates and heat fluxes in such flames with high accuracy.

Here, we present a protocol to use a curvelet transform-based, open-source MATLAB software tool for quantifying fibrillar collagen organization in the extracellular matrix of both normal and diseased tissues. This tool can be applied to images with collagen fibers or other types of line-like structures.
