Algal Concentration Monitoring

Algal concentration monitoring is the measurement of algal abundance in water or other environmental samples to assess ecosystem condition, productivity, and potential risks from harmful blooms. It commonly uses optical signals such as chlorophyll fluorescence or light absorbance, which increase with algal biomass, alongside microscopy or cell counting for species-specific estimates. Measurements can be collected in laboratories, field instruments, or remote-sensing systems and compared over time to identify changes in nutrient enrichment, water quality, and seasonal growth. Reliable monitoring supports early detection of harmful algal blooms, guides environmental management, and improves understanding of aquatic ecosystem dynamics.
