Automatic Body Size Measurement

Automatic body size measurement is a method that uses imaging, sensors, or computational analysis to estimate an organism’s physical dimensions with limited manual handling. The process typically captures standardized body images or measurements, identifies the organism and relevant anatomical boundaries, and applies calibrated algorithms to calculate traits such as length, width, area, or volume. In environmental research, this approach supports efficient monitoring of wildlife, aquatic organisms, and populations under changing habitat conditions. By improving measurement speed, consistency, and repeatability, it helps researchers assess growth, health, population structure, and ecological responses while reducing observer bias and disturbance.

Morphological scaling relationships capture and describe organismal shape. We present a method to measure morphological scaling relationships across the natural range of body sizes in fully metamorphic insects. Using a simple diet manipulation we increase the distribution of trait sizes, permitting the accurate description of how shape and size co-vary.

The article is based on the creation of an adapted protocol to scan, detect, sort, and identify digitized objects corresponding to benthic river macroinvertebrates using a semi-automatic imaging procedure. This procedure allows the acquisition of the individual size distributions and size metrics of a macroinvertebrate community in about 1 h.
