Biochar Characterization

Biochar characterization is the systematic analysis of biochar’s physical, chemical, and structural properties to determine how it will behave in environmental systems. It examines features such as carbon content, ash, pH, surface area, porosity, functional groups, nutrient availability, and potential contaminants using methods including elemental analysis, spectroscopy, microscopy, and adsorption measurements. These properties reflect feedstock and pyrolysis conditions, which shape biochar’s stability, reactivity, and interactions with water, soil, and dissolved chemicals. Characterization therefore guides material selection and quality assessment for soil amendment, carbon storage, pollutant removal, and nutrient management, while supporting comparisons across studies and applications.
