Electrostatic Transport

Electrostatic transport is the movement of charged particles or ions under the influence of electric forces, a process that affects how matter is distributed through air, water, and other environments. Electric fields accelerate charged species, while Coulombic attraction and repulsion, charge transfer, and interactions with surfaces determine their trajectories, deposition, and removal. In environmental science, these principles help explain the behavior of atmospheric aerosols, airborne pollutants, and particles near natural or engineered surfaces. Understanding electrostatic transport supports models of contaminant dispersion, improves particulate filtration and capture technologies, and informs strategies for monitoring and managing environmental pollutants.

Electrostatic Boundary Conditions

2025

Consider an external electric field propagating through a homogeneous medium. When the electric field crosses the surface boundary of the medium, it undergoes a discontinuity. The electric field can be resolved into normal and tangential components. The amount by which the field changes at any boundary is given by the difference between the field components above and below the surface boundary. The surface integral of an electric field is given by Gauss's law in integral form and is related to...

Electrostatic Method to Remove Particulate Organic Matter from Soil

Removing recently deposited and incompletely decomposed plant material from soil samples reduces the influence of temporary seasonal inputs on soil organic carbon measurements. Attraction to an electrostatically charged surface can be used to quickly remove a substantial amount of particulate organic matter.

Electrostatic Boundary Conditions in Dielectrics

2023

When an electric field passes from one homogeneous medium to another, crossing the boundary between the two mediums imparts a discontinuity in the electric field. This results in electrostatic boundary conditions that depend on the type of mediums the field propagates through. Consider a case where both the mediums across a boundary are two different dielectric materials. Recall that the electric field and electric displacement are proportional and related through the material's permittivity.

Transport and Acclimatization of Rodents for Research

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Transporting rodents for research requires procedures that minimize stress and maintain animal welfare during movement to minimize the influence on experimental outcomes. Transport cages should provide adequate ventilation,...

Regulated mRNA Transport

2020

In eukaryotes, transcription and translation are compartmentalized; an mRNA is first synthesized in the nucleus and then selectively transported to the cytoplasm for protein synthesis. Before transport, a pre-mRNA undergoes several steps of post-transcriptional modifications including splicing, 5' capping, and the addition of a poly-adenine tail. Various proteins bind to the pre-mRNA during these modifications. The mRNA transport takes place with the help of multiple proteins playing specific...
