Hellgrammite Biomonitor

A hellgrammite biomonitor uses the aquatic larva of a dobsonfly as a biological indicator of freshwater conditions. Hellgrammites typically inhabit cool, well-oxygenated streams, where their presence, abundance, and distribution reflect habitat quality and responses to environmental stress. Researchers and environmental managers can sample these larvae alongside measurements of dissolved oxygen, temperature, flow, and pollutants to assess stream health over time. Because biological monitoring captures the effects of multiple interacting conditions, hellgrammites can complement chemical tests and support watershed assessment, pollution detection, habitat restoration, and studies of aquatic ecosystem change.
