Mixer Equilibration

Mixer equilibration is the process of allowing materials within a mixer to reach a stable, uniform state before sampling, separation, or further treatment. Agitation promotes circulation and dispersion, while adequate mixing time allows concentration, temperature, and phase differences to decrease through mass and heat transfer. In environmental research and engineering, equilibration helps produce representative samples and more reliable measurements of contaminants, dissolved constituents, or treatment performance. Controlling mixer speed, vessel geometry, material properties, and residence time can improve uniformity and reproducibility, supporting laboratory studies, process monitoring, and the design of water and wastewater treatment systems.

In this work we explain the fabrication and use of a microfluidic mixer capable of mixing two solutions in ~8 μs. We also demonstrate the use of these mixers with spectroscopic detection using UV fluorescence and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET).

Synthesizing Lipid Nanoparticles by Turbulent Flow in Confined Impinging Jet Mixers

2024

A detailed protocol for synthesizing lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) using confined impinging jet (CIJ) mixer technologies, including a two-jet CIJ and a four-jet multi-inlet vortex mixer (µMIVM), is demonstrated. The CIJ mixers generate reproducible, turbulent micro-mixing environments, resulting in the production of monodisperse LNPs.

2016

A simple liquid nitrogen Dewar/cryostat apparatus comprised of a small fused silica optical Dewar, a thermocouple, and a charge-coupled device (CCD) spectrograph are described. The experiments for which this Dewar/cryostat is designed require fast sample loading, freezing, and alignment, accurate and stable sample temperatures, and small size/portability.

We describe a novel method for increasing cDNA yield from single-cell quantities of mRNA in otherwise standard laboratory reverse transcription reactions. The novelty resides in the use of a micromixer, which utilizes the phenomenon of acoustic microstreaming, to mix fluids at microliter scales more effectively than shaking, vortexing or trituration.
