Open Raceway Pond

An open raceway pond is a shallow, outdoor cultivation system that circulates water and suspended microorganisms through a loop-shaped channel, making it a low-cost platform for environmental biotechnology. A paddlewheel drives continuous circulation around divider walls, while sunlight, nutrients, carbon dioxide, and mixing support photosynthetic growth, commonly of microalgae or other aquatic biomass. These ponds can help recover nutrients from wastewater, remove selected pollutants, and produce biomass for research, biofuels, or other bioproducts. Because they remain exposed to weather and contamination, performance depends on light, temperature, evaporation, culture stability, and careful monitoring of water chemistry and flow.

An experimental methodology is presented to compare the performance of small (100 L) and large (1,000 L) scale reactors designed for algae remediation of landfill wastewater. System characteristics, including surface area to volume ratio, retention time, biomass density, and wastewater feed concentrations, can be adjusted based on application.

Understanding the ecosystem services and processes provided by vernal ponds and the impacts of anthropogenic activities on their ability to provide these services requires intensive hydrologic monitoring. This sampling protocol using in-situ monitoring equipment was developed to understand the impact of anthropogenic activities on water levels and quality.

Air pollution impacts the quality of life of all organisms. Here, we describe the use of microalgae biotechnology for the treatment of biogas (simultaneous removal of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide) and the production of biomethane through semi-industrial open high-rate algal ponds and subsequent analysis of treatment efficiency, pH, dissolved oxygen, and microalgae growth.

Source: Elizabeth Suter1, Christopher Corbo1, Jonathan Blaize1 1 Department of Biological Sciences, Wagner College, 1 Campus Road, Staten Island NY, 10301 The Winogradsky column is a miniature, enclosed ecosystem used for enriching sediment microbial communities, especially those involved in sulfur cycling. The column was first used by Sergei Winogradsky in the 1880s and has since been applied in the study of many diverse microorganisms involved in biogeochemistry, such as photosynthesizers,...
