Pheromone Bait

Pheromone bait is a pest-management tool that uses chemical signals to attract or influence members of a target species, making it valuable for environmentally selective monitoring and control. It typically contains a synthetic sex or aggregation pheromone that mimics a natural signal, drawing insects into a trap or concentrating them where they can be detected or removed. In environmental management, pheromone baits help estimate pest abundance, identify population movements, and support early intervention. Because they act on species-specific communication pathways, they can reduce reliance on broad-spectrum insecticides and limit unintended effects on beneficial organisms, although their effectiveness depends on target species, timing, placement, and environmental conditions.

Phage display is a powerful technique to capture proteins or protein moieties that interact with an immobilized molecule of interest. Once a decision of the type of phage cDNA library to create and screen has been made, the protocol described here permits efficient affinity selection leading to identification of interactors.

ELISA-Based Method to Analyze Interactions between Bait and Prey Proteins

2025

This video describes an ELISA-based technique that detects protein-protein interactions between two proteins by measuring the binding of the second protein to the immobilized first protein. The bound second protein is detected using specific antibodies labeled with an enzyme, such as horseradish peroxidase.

In mice, the ability to detect pheromones is principally mediated by the vomeronasal organ (VNO). Here, an acute tissue slice preparation of VNO for performing calcium imaging is described. This physiological approach allows observations of subpopulations and/or individual neurons in a living tissue and is convenient for receptor-ligand identification.

Measuring Physiological Responses of Drosophila Sensory Neurons to Lipid Pheromones Using Live Calcium Imaging

The forelegs and proboscis of Drosophila contain a rich repertoire of gustatory sensory neurons. Here, we present a method using calcium imaging to measure physiological responses from sensory neurons in the foreleg and proboscis of live flies upon exogenous application of a gustatory pheromone.
