Photosynthetic Capacity Monitoring

Photosynthetic capacity monitoring is the assessment of how effectively plants convert light energy and carbon dioxide into chemical energy, providing insight into plant function and environmental stress. Researchers measure indicators such as carbon assimilation, chlorophyll fluorescence, and stomatal conductance under defined light, temperature, and carbon dioxide conditions to evaluate the photosynthetic response. In environmental research, these measurements reveal how drought, heat, pollution, nutrient availability, and changing atmospheric conditions affect vegetation. The resulting data support ecosystem monitoring, crop and forest management, climate-change research, and predictions of carbon fixation and plant productivity.

Source: Shivaiah, K., et al. Plastoglobule Lipid Droplet Isolation from Plant Leaf Tissue and Cyanobacteria. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)The video demonstrates the isolation of plastoglobules from cyanobacteria. It begins with a culture of cyanobacteria and proceeds through cell disruption using mechanical force. The release of photosynthetic pigments indicates successful lysis. A sucrose step gradient is then used to separate cellular components by density, allowing low-density plastoglobules to form a...

Lung Capacity

2019

The air in the lungs is measured in volumes and capacities. Lung volume measures reflect the amount of air taken in, released, or left over after a lung function, like a single inhalation. Lung capacity measures are sums of two or more lung volume measures. There are four defined lung volume measures: tidal volume, inspiratory reserve volume, expiratory reserve volume, and residual volume. Tidal volume is the amount of air inhaled and exhaled in a normal breath. Inspiratory...
