Ptfe Vial

PTFE vials are laboratory containers made from polytetrafluoroethylene, a fluoropolymer valued for chemical resistance and low surface reactivity when samples must be stored or prepared reliably. Their carbon-fluorine polymer structure gives PTFE a nonpolar, low-energy surface that resists attack by many acids, bases, and solvents while reducing adsorption of some analytes to the container wall. In environmental research, these vials support the collection, preservation, and analysis of water, soil, and sediment extracts before chromatographic or spectroscopic measurement. Selecting PTFE helps protect sample integrity, although material compatibility, contamination control, and responsible end-of-life handling remain important.

Source: Stenzler, B. R. et. al., An Anaerobic Biosensor Assay for the Detection of Mercury and Cadmium. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the use of genetically engineered bacterial biosensors to accurately measure the bioavailable fraction of mercury ions under anaerobic conditions. By varying the concentration of magnesium sulfate, the assay ensures that the biosensor selectively responds to free mercury ions, as indicated by changes in fluorescence intensity.

Phospholipid fatty acids provide information about the structure of soil microbial communities. We present methods for extraction from soil samples with a single-phase chloroform mixture, fractionation of extracted lipids using solid phase extraction columns, and methanolysis to produce fatty acid methyl esters, which are analyzed by capillary gas chromatography.

Ammonia emissions are a major threat to the environment by eutrophication, soil acidification and fine particle formation and stem mainly from agricultural sources. This method allows ammonia loss measurements in replicated field trials enabling statistical analysis of emissions and of relationships between crop development and emissions.

Optimized sampling protocols and the development of new wipe materials can be facilitated by standardized measurements of collection efficiency from wipe-sampling. Our approach for sampling trace explosives uses an automated device to control speed, force, and distance during wipe-sampling followed by extraction of collected explosives.
