Solid Sample Homogenization

Solid sample homogenization is the preparation of a solid material into a uniform, representative mixture so its composition can be measured reliably. In environmental analysis, grinding, milling, cutting, or mixing reduces particle size and distributes target compounds throughout the sample, while controlled handling helps limit contamination, moisture loss, and changes in analyte concentration. Homogenized soil, sediment, plant, and waste samples support consistent subsampling and improve the accuracy and reproducibility of chemical, biological, and physical tests. This step is especially important when contaminants occur unevenly, because a representative portion is essential for defensible measurements and meaningful comparisons among sites or treatments.

Test for Homogeneity

2023

The goodness–of–fit test can be used to decide whether a population fits a given distribution, but it will not suffice to decide whether two populations follow the same unknown distribution. A different test, called the test for homogeneity, can be used to conclude whether two populations have the same distribution. To calculate the test statistic for a test for homogeneity, follow the same procedure as with the test of independence. The hypotheses for the test for homogeneity can be stated as...

Solid-Liquid Extraction

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Jay Deiner — City University of New York Extraction is a crucial step in most chemical analyses. It entails removing the analyte from its sample matrix and passing it into the phase required for spectroscopic or chromatographic identification and quantification. When the sample is a solid and the required phase for analysis is a liquid, the process is called solid-liquid extraction. A simple and broadly applicable form of solid-liquid extraction entails combining the...
