Air Pollutant

An air pollutant is a solid, liquid, or gaseous substance present in the atmosphere at concentrations that can harm human health, ecosystems, materials, or climate. Pollutants may be released directly from sources such as vehicles, industry, and wildfires, or form through atmospheric reactions, including sunlight-driven transformation of precursor chemicals into secondary pollutants. Environmental scientists measure pollutants through air-quality monitoring and analyze their sources, transport, persistence, and effects. This knowledge supports emission controls, exposure assessment, environmental regulation, and strategies that reduce respiratory disease, ecosystem damage, visibility loss, and climate-related impacts.

Source: Villela, H. D. M., et al. Prospecting Microbial Strains for Bioremediation and Probiotics Development for Metaorganism Research and Preservation. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates the isolation of pollutant-degrading marine bacteria through serial dilution, colony selection, and growth in EE2-containing medium. By using EE2 as the sole carbon source, the protocol identifies bacterial strains capable of metabolizing this environmental pollutant.

The Efficient Level of Pollution

2025

The production of goods is essential for economic growth and societal development, but it often results in pollution as an unintended consequence. Completely eliminating pollution, while seemingly ideal, is impractical. This would mean stopping all production of vital goods and services. The real challenge is properly balancing the benefits of goods production against the resulting environmental damage. The Concept of Efficient Pollution The marginal social cost of pollution is the sum of...
