Soil Microbiology

Soil microbiology is the study of microorganisms and their activities in soil, where they regulate nutrient availability, organic matter decomposition, and ecosystem health. Bacteria, fungi, archaea, and other microbes release enzymes that break down complex materials, transform carbon and nitrogen compounds, and interact with plant roots through processes such as mineralization and symbiosis. In environmental sciences, soil microbiology helps explain soil fertility, carbon storage, greenhouse gas production, and pollutant degradation. Its methods and findings support sustainable agriculture, ecosystem restoration, bioremediation, and assessment of how land-use change or climate conditions alter soil function.

This study presents an excavation method for investigating subsurface hydrological, geochemical, and microbiological heterogeneity of a soil lysimeter. The lysimeter simulates an artificial hillslope which was initially under homogeneous condition and had been subjected to approximately 5,000 mm of water over eight cycles of irrigation in an 18-month period.
