Vegetal Pole Surgery

Vegetal pole surgery is a microsurgical embryology technique used to remove, isolate, or transplant tissue from the vegetal pole of an early embryo, helping researchers determine how localized maternal factors influence development. Performed under a microscope at defined embryonic stages, the procedure preserves tissue orientation while allowing vegetal cells to be cultured alone or grafted into a new position; their subsequent behavior reveals cell-autonomous effects and signaling interactions. In genetics and developmental biology, this approach helps distinguish inherited molecular determinants from inductive cues, linking vegetal pole activity to mesendoderm formation, germ-layer patterning, gene expression, and developmental fate.

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. DC/DC converters are power electronic converters that convert DC voltages and currents from a certain level to another level. Typically, voltage conversion is the main purpose of DC/DC converters and three main types of conversion exist in a single converter: stepping up, stepping down, and stepping up or down. Among the most common step-up converters are boost converters (Refer to this collections...

The transfer function is a fundamental concept representing the ratio of two polynomials. The numerator and denominator encapsulate the system's dynamics. The zeros and poles of this transfer function are critical in determining the system's behavior and stability. Simple poles are unique roots of the denominator polynomial. Each simple pole corresponds to a distinct solution to the system's characteristic equation, typically resulting in exponential decay terms in the system's response.

Source: Wunderlin, T., et al. Physical Isolation of Endospores from Environmental Samples by Targeted Lysis of Vegetative Cells. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates a method to isolate endospores from an environmental sample containing both vegetative cells and various bacteria. The procedure involves filtration, mechanical disruption, and selective chemical treatment to weaken and lyse vegetative cells while preserving endospores. The final step isolates the resilient endospores through...
