Antimicrobial Compound Screening

Antimicrobial compound screening is the systematic evaluation of substances for their ability to inhibit or eliminate infectious microorganisms, supporting the development of new treatments. In a typical assay, pathogens are exposed to defined compound concentrations, and changes in growth, viability, or replication are measured against appropriate controls to determine activity and dose response. Researchers use these results to identify promising candidates, compare potency, and assess selectivity before more advanced testing. In immunology and infection research, screening helps investigate host-pathogen interactions, address antimicrobial resistance, and prioritize compounds for therapeutic development.

Methods are described for thin-layer chromatographic (TLC) separation of plant extracts and contact bioautography to identify antibacterial metabolites. The methods are applied to the screening of red clover phenolic compounds inhibiting hyper ammonia-producing bacteria (HAB) native to the bovine rumen.

Synergistic Antimicrobial Effect of Membrane-Targeting Compounds on Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

Take suspensions of an antibiotic-resistant strain of a pathogenic bacterium.Treat one suspension with a short, membrane-disrupting antibiotic compound and the other with both the short compound and a longer, membrane-intercalating compound.Incubate both suspensions with agitation. These compounds mimic the lipid bilayer structure, enabling their spontaneous insertion into bacterial membranes. The short compound spans only part of the membrane’s thickness, creating a structural mismatch. An In Vitro Broth Microdilution Assay for the Screening of Antifungal Compounds

2025

This video demonstrates an in vitro assay to screen antifungal compounds using a broth microdilution assay. Test compounds are serially diluted in a microtiter plate and incubated with a fungal inoculum. Post-incubation, the plate is examined for wells without visible fungal growth to assess the antifungal potential of the test compounds and their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC).
