Equine Respiratory Disease

Equine respiratory disease encompasses infectious and noninfectious disorders that affect the upper and lower airways of horses, making it a major concern for animal health, performance, and welfare. Viral or bacterial pathogens, allergens, and environmental irritants can disrupt mucociliary clearance and activate innate and adaptive immune responses, producing inflammation, mucus accumulation, coughing, and impaired gas exchange. Immunology and infection research uses clinical examination, pathogen detection, cytology, and immune profiling to distinguish causes and characterize disease progression. This knowledge supports vaccination, biosecurity, targeted treatment, and stable-management strategies while improving understanding of host-pathogen interactions and respiratory disease prevention in equine populations.

2026

Human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a widespread pathogen that primarily targets infants and young children but also poses a serious health risk to elderly and immunocompromised individuals. Belonging to the Pneumoviridae family, RSV is a negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus within the Pneumovirus genus. Its global health burden is significant, with millions of cases annually resulting in hospitalizations and mortality, particularly in resource-limited settings. Although most...

This paper describes a method of abdominal wall closure using tension and apposition sutures in horses undergoing ventral midline laparotomies. It also describes methods for prevention and management of postoperative incisional complications, such as bandaging, negative pressure therapy, and in case of wound breakdown, the application of retention sutures.

A Simple Microaspiration Technique for Isolating Somatic Cells from Cryopreserved Equine Semen as Nuclear Donors for Cloning

2025

This protocol presents a simple microaspiration technique to isolate viable somatic cells (SCs) from cryopreserved equine semen. Unlike traditional approaches, this technique avoids long in vitro cultures and overcomes sperm contamination, enabling immediate use in somatic cell cloning.

Harvesting Articular Cartilage From Joints of an Equine Donor: A Surgical Procedure to Isolate Vascular Connective Tissue From Cadaveric Joints of an Equine Donor
