Extracellular Ph Imaging

Extracellular pH imaging measures and visualizes acidity changes in the space surrounding cells, providing an important readout of tissue physiology, inflammation, and infection. It typically uses pH-sensitive fluorescent probes or genetically encoded sensors whose signals change with proton concentration, enabling microscopy to map spatial and temporal variations in the extracellular environment. In immunology and infection research, these measurements can reveal how activated immune cells, microbes, or infected tissues remodel local acidity and how those changes influence cell signaling, microbial survival, and host-pathogen interactions. The approach supports analysis of disease microenvironments and evaluation of interventions that alter inflammatory or infectious processes.
