Helminth Infection Model

A helminth infection model is an experimental system used to study how parasitic worms interact with hosts and shape immune responses. In these models, infection or exposure to helminth antigens activates innate and adaptive pathways, often involving type 2 immunity, eosinophils, and antibody production, while parasites may alter host signaling to support persistence. Researchers use animal, cellular, and molecular models to examine parasite development, tissue damage, immune regulation, and host resistance. These approaches support the evaluation of vaccines, antiparasitic treatments, and immunotherapies, while also clarifying how helminth-induced immune modulation may influence allergies, inflammation, and other infectious diseases.

Schistosoma mansoni eggs are potent stimulators of the T helper type 2 (Th2) immune response, characteristic of parasite infection, asthma and allergic inflammation. This protocol utilizes S. mansoni egg injection to generate a CD4 Th2 cytokine-induced inflammatory response in the lung, characterized by lung granuloma formation around the egg, eosinophilia and macrophage alternative activation.

Determining Soil-transmitted Helminth Infection Status and Physical Fitness of School-aged Children

Chronic infection with soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) causes malabsorption, stunting, and wasting in the growing child. Hence, it is plausible that these infections also reduce the physical fitness of children. Here, we visualize two techniques for the diagnosis of STHs and the 20-meter shuttle run test for assessing children's physical fitness.

Helminth Collection and Identification from Wildlife

Wild animals are commonly parasitized by a wide range of helminths. The four major types of helminths are “roundworms” (nematodes), “thorny-headed worms” (acanthocephalans), “flukes” (trematodes), and “tapeworms” (cestodes). Here we describe how helminths are collected from a vertebrate animal and how they are preserved and taxonomically...

The larva of the wax moth Galleria mellonella was recently established as an in vivo model to study Legionella pneumophila infection. Here, we demonstrate fundamental techniques to characterize the pathogenesis of Legionella in the larvae, including inoculation, measurement of bacterial virulence and replication as well as extraction and analysis of infected hemocytes.
