Hippocampal Cannulation

Hippocampal cannulation is a neurosurgical technique that places a guide cannula into the hippocampus, enabling repeated access to this brain region while minimizing additional tissue disruption. Through the implanted guide, researchers can administer compounds or collect samples from the hippocampus under controlled experimental conditions, allowing localized manipulation and measurement over time. In immunology and infection research, the method supports studies of how pathogens, immune mediators, or therapeutic agents affect hippocampal tissue and behavior. By linking targeted brain access with analyses of neuroinflammation and host responses, hippocampal cannulation helps clarify interactions between the central nervous system and immune system.

Intraduodenal Cannulation in a Rat Model for Immunopathology Studies

2025

This video demonstrates intraduodenal cannulation in a rat model. After anesthetizing the rat, the duodenum is located and a small puncture is created. A J-shaped cannula with a beveled tip is carefully inserted and secured, and the incision is closed. The cannulated rat model enables intra-intestinal infusion for immunopathology studies.

Cannulation of the Mouse Submandibular Salivary Gland via the Wharton's Duct

A protocol for the cannulation of the mouse submandibular salivary gland via the Wharton's duct is described. For this experiment, the trypan blue solution is used as a dyer to demonstrate how this technique effectively delivers infusions into the targeted gland, and to suggest the reliability of this new approach as a potential clinical drug/cell therapy for the regeneration of salivary glands.

This manuscript describes a simple and reproducible protocol for isolation of intracerebral arterioles (a group of blood vessels encompassing parenchymal arterioles, penetrating arterioles and pre-capillary arterioles) from mice, to be used in pressure myography, immunofluorescence, biochemistry, and molecular studies.

We describe a method to prepare organotypic hippocampal slices that can be easily adapted to other brain regions. Brain slices are laid on porous membranes and culture media is allowed to form an interface. This method preserves the gross architecture of the hippocampus for up to 2 weeks in culture.
