Nalt Ablation

NALT ablation is the experimental removal or functional disruption of nasal-associated lymphoid tissue, a mucosal immune site that helps initiate responses to inhaled antigens and pathogens. By eliminating this lymphoid tissue, researchers can assess how nasal antigen sampling, local lymphocyte activation, and communication with systemic immune compartments contribute to host defense. In immunology and infection research, NALT ablation serves as a model for testing the role of upper-airway immune induction in respiratory infection, mucosal vaccination, and pathogen transmission. Comparing ablated and intact animals can reveal whether protective immunity depends on NALT or is compensated by other lymphoid tissues.

Methods to examine contributions of the nasopharyngeal-associated lymphoreticular tissues (NALT) to nasal and systemic immune responses of mice to intranasal vaccines are described. We demonstrate a surgical procedure to establish a NALT-dependent mouse model and ex vivo cultures of extracted NALT.

Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) with an ablation catheter is a curative treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF). Robotic catheter systems aim to improve catheter steerability. Here, a procedure with a new robotic catheter system is presented. The goal of the procedure is electrical block between pulmonary vein and left atrium.

Source: Muto, A., et al. Ablation of a Neuronal Population Using a Two-photon Laser and Its Assessment Using Calcium Imaging and Behavioral Recording in Zebrafish Larvae. J. Vis. Exp. (2018) In this video, a two-photon laser ablation procedure is demonstrated, enabling the selective destruction of fluorescent neurons in agarose-immobilized zebrafish larvae. High-resolution imaging before and after the procedure confirms efficient neuronal damage, as observed by the absence of fluorescence.
