Novel Virus Discovery

Novel virus discovery is the process of identifying and characterizing viruses that have not been previously recognized, a critical step in understanding infectious disease and immune responses. Researchers analyze clinical, environmental, or animal samples using methods such as metagenomic sequencing, which detects viral genetic material without requiring prior knowledge of the virus or successful laboratory culture. Bioinformatic comparison with known viral genomes can reveal genetic relationships, while additional testing helps assess host range, replication, and disease relevance. These discoveries strengthen infection surveillance, support the development of diagnostic assays and vaccines, and clarify how emerging viruses interact with host immunity.

Drug Discovery: Overview

2023

Drug discovery is a multifaceted process involving extensive screening, testing, and optimization of lead compounds to identify potential new drugs for therapeutic use. It combines several approaches, including screening large numbers of natural products, chemical modification of known active molecules, identification of new drug targets, and rational design based on biological mechanisms and drug-receptor structure. These approaches are carried out in both academic research laboratories and...

What are Viruses?

2019

Overview A virus is a microscopic infectious particle that consists of an RNA or DNA genome enclosed in a protein shell. It is not able to reproduce on its own: it can only make more viruses by entering a cell and using its cellular machinery. When a virus infects a host cell, it removes its protein coat and directs the host’s machinery to transcribe and translate its genetic material. The hijacked cell assembles the replicated components into thousands of viral progeny, which can rupture and...
