Nutrient Starvation Treatment

Nutrient starvation treatment is a therapeutic strategy that limits essential nutrients to suppress the growth or activity of target cells, including infectious microbes. In immunology and infection, it builds on nutritional immunity, in which host proteins sequester resources such as iron, while controlled nutrient restriction can disrupt microbial metabolism, energy production, and biosynthesis. Researchers use this approach to study pathogen dependence on host nutrients and to assess whether nutrient deprivation can enhance antimicrobial defenses or complement conventional therapies. Its impact depends on selectively restricting pathogen access while preserving host-cell function, making metabolic competition an important focus of infection research.

Nutrients in Aquatic Ecosystems

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Nitrogen and phosphorus are essential plant nutrients found in aquatic ecosystems and both are monitored as a part of water quality testing because in excess amounts they can cause significant water quality problems. Nitrogen in water is measured as the common form nitrate (NO3-) that is dissolved in water and readily absorbed by photosynthesizers such as algae. The common form of phosphorus measured is phosphate...

Here, we present an easy-to-follow protocol to establish a successful hydroponic system for plant nutrition studies. This protocol has been extensively tested in Arabidopsis and can easily be adapted to other plant species to study specific nutritional requirements or the effect of non-essential elements on plant growth and development.
