Restrainer Tube Positioning

Restrainer tube positioning is the controlled placement of a laboratory animal within a restraint tube to limit movement while maintaining safe access for experimental procedures. Correct positioning aligns the animal’s body and head, supports stable restraint, and exposes the intended site without excessive pressure or obstruction of breathing. In immunology and infection research, this technique helps standardize inoculation, dosing, blood collection, and other interventions, reducing handling-related variability and improving animal welfare. Consistent positioning also supports reproducible measurements across study groups and strengthens the interpretation of immune responses, pathogen effects, and treatment outcomes.

Source: Rachel Liu, BAO, MBBCh, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Tube thoracostomy (chest tube placement) is a procedure during which a hollow tube is inserted into the thoracic cavity for drainage of fluid or air. Emergency chest tube insertion is performed for definitive treatment of tension pneumothorax, traumatic hemothorax, large-volume pleural effusions, and empyemas. Irrespective of the cause of air and fluid accumulation in the pleural space, the...

Habituation and Positive Reinforcement for Rodent Handling

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Habituation and positive reinforcement are refinement strategies that help reduce stress during routine handling and experimental procedures in rodents. These approaches improve animal welfare, encourage voluntary cooperation,...

Juxtacellular Monitoring and Localization of Single Neurons within Sub-cortical Brain Structures of Alert, Head-restrained Rats

This protocol describes the design and surgical implantation of a head-restraining mechanism to monitor neuronal activity in sub-cortical brain structures in alert rats. It delineates procedures to isolate single neurons in the juxtacellular configuration and to efficiently identify their anatomical locations.

Non-restraining EEG radiotelemetry is a valuable methodological approach to record in vivo long-term electroencephalograms from freely moving rodents. This detailed protocol describes stereotaxic epidural and deep intracerebral electrode placement in different brain regions in order to obtain reliable recordings of CNS rhythmicity and CNS related behavioral stages.
