Sodium Mri

Sodium MRI is a noninvasive imaging method that maps sodium-23 distribution in tissues, providing physiological information beyond conventional proton MRI. In a magnetic field, radiofrequency pulses excite naturally occurring sodium nuclei, and specialized coils detect their signal; because sodium concentrations and relaxation properties differ from those of water protons, the technique requires dedicated acquisition and reconstruction methods. In immunology and infection research, altered tissue sodium can reflect changes in cellular integrity, extracellular volume, edema, and inflammatory activity. Sodium MRI therefore complements anatomical imaging by helping characterize tissue dysfunction and monitor disease-related changes over time.

Early detection of apoptosis may identify at-risk cell populations in a variety of diseases. Here we demonstrate a method to link an early apoptosis-detection protein (Annexin V) to a MRI-detectable iron oxide nanoparticle (SPIO). This method may be extended to other proteins of interest to generate MRI-detectable molecular imaging probes.

Regulation of Sodium and Potassium

2024

The regulation of sodium and potassium ion concentrations in the human body is a complex process governed primarily by hormones such as aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone (ADH), and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). Sodium Regulation Sodium ions make up approximately 90% of extracellular cations, with a normal blood plasma concentration of 136–148 mEq/L. A decrease in blood volume and pressure triggers the release of renin from granular cells in the juxtaglomerular complex (JGC), primarily in...
