Function Minimization

Function minimization is the process of finding the input that produces the smallest value of a mathematical function, subject to any stated constraints. In unconstrained problems, the method typically identifies critical points by setting the derivative or gradient to zero, then uses curvature, convexity, or comparison of function values to determine whether a minimum occurs; constrained problems may require Lagrange multipliers or other optimization methods. Function minimization supports applications in numerical analysis, statistics, engineering, economics, and machine learning, where models are fitted by reducing an objective or loss function. Understanding local and global minima helps assess solution quality, stability, and computational efficiency.

Creating the Minimal Group Paradigm

Source: Julian Wills & Jay Van Bavel—New York University The study of intergroup relations, such as prejudice, conflict, and discrimination, has always been a central topic in social psychology. Does discrimination stem from competition with other groups, a history of conflict, or derogatory stereotypes? Despite an abundance of real-world examples, the ingredients that lead to intergroup discrimination are often unclear. To help solve this problem, a group of psychologists created "minimal...

Cost Minimization Point

2024

The cost minimization point is where a firm produces a given output at the lowest possible cost, given input prices. It occurs where an isoquant curve is tangent to the lowest achievable isocost line). To illustrate, consider a firm that aims to produce 100 units of output using labor and capital. The isoquant for 100 units shows all efficient combinations of L and K that can produce this output level. Meanwhile, the isocost line reflects all combinations of these inputs that the firm can...

We describe a novel intrathoracic esophagogastric anastomotic technique designed to create a large diameter anastomosis while simultaneously maintaining conduit blood supply to minimize the incidence of anastomotic leaks and strictures. Construction and orientation of the stomach conduit designed to optimize upper gastrointestinal tract function is also described.
