Minimum Material Cost

Minimum Material Cost is an optimization objective that seeks the least expense or amount of material needed to construct an object while satisfying required dimensions or capacity. In mathematics, the problem is modeled by expressing material use as a cost function of geometric variables, applying constraints such as fixed volume or surface area, and locating the minimum with derivatives, critical points, or inequality methods. These models help compare designs, reduce waste and manufacturing expense, and clarify how geometry, algebra, and calculus support efficient decisions in engineering, architecture, and production planning.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA In contrast to the production of cars or toasters, where millions of identical copies are made and extensive prototype testing is possible, each civil engineering structure is unique and very expensive to reproduce (Fig.1). Therefore, civil engineers must extensively rely on analytical modeling to design their structures. These models are simplified abstractions of reality and are used to...

Minimum Burning Pressures of Water-based Emulsion Explosives

2017

We present an apparatus based on hot-wire ignition in a pressurized enclosure and an associated methodology to measure the minimum pressure required to induce sustained combustion in water-based emulsion explosives. This method improves product characterization to allow one to use them more safely during pumping and mixing operations.

Local Maximum and Minimum Values

In multivariable calculus, a function of two variables can exhibit local maximum or minimum values at certain points on its surface. A local maximum occurs when the function's value at a point is greater than at all nearby points, while a local minimum occurs when the function’s value is less than at all nearby locations. These points are referred to as local extrema and are of central importance in optimization problems.Local extrema are found at critical points, where the surface becomes...

Supercritical Nitrogen Processing for the Purification of Reactive Porous Materials

Nitrogen is an effective supercritical fluid for extraction or drying processes due to its small molecular size, high density in the near-liquid supercritical regime, and chemical inertness. We present a supercritical nitrogen drying protocol for the purification treatment of reactive, porous materials.
