Real-life Fractions

Real-life fractions are numbers that represent parts of a whole, set, or quantity and help describe proportional relationships in everyday situations. A fraction compares a numerator, which counts selected parts, with a denominator, which defines the total number of equal parts; equivalent fractions express the same value, while operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division support calculations with quantities. Applying fractions helps people interpret recipes, measure distances, compare prices, divide resources, understand time, and assess probabilities. Building fluency with these relationships strengthens quantitative reasoning and connects symbolic mathematics to practical decision-making in science, finance, engineering, and daily life.

Real-Life Applications of Multiple Integrals

2026

Multiple integrals provide a powerful mathematical framework for calculating physical quantities distributed throughout two- and three-dimensional regions. One important application is the determination of volume in objects with curved geometries, such as storage tanks, pipes, and reservoirs. Cylindrical coordinates are especially useful for systems with rotational symmetry because they simplify the description of circular and paraboloid-shaped regions.Consider a paraboloid-shaped water tank...

Half-life of a Reaction

2020

The half-life of a reaction (t1/2) is the time required for one-half of a given amount of reactant to be consumed. In each succeeding half-life, half of the remaining concentration of the reactant is consumed. For example, during the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, during the first half-life (from 0.00 hours to 6.00 hours), the concentration of H2O2 decreases from 1.000 M to 0.500 M. During the second half-life (from 6.00 hours to 12.00 hours), the concentration decreases from 0.500 M to...

Real-time Iontophoresis with Tetramethylammonium to Quantify Volume Fraction and Tortuosity of Brain Extracellular Space

This protocol describes real-time iontophoresis, a method that measures physical parameters of the extracellular space (ECS) of living brains. The diffusion of an inert molecule released into the ECS is used to calculate the ECS volume fraction and tortuosity. It is ideal for studying acute reversible changes to brain ECS.

Characteristics of Life

Biology is a natural science that studies life and living organisms, including their structure, function, development, interactions, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. The field's scope is extensive and divided into several specialized disciplines, such as anatomy, physiology, ethology, genetics, and many more. All living things share a few key traits, including cellular organization, heritable genetic material and the ability to adapt/evolve, metabolism to regulate energy needs, the...

The Angiosperm Life Cycle

2020

Plants have a life cycle split between two multicellular stages: a haploid stage—with cells containing one set of chromosomes—and a diploid stage—with cells containing two sets of chromosomes. The haploid stage is the gamete-producing gametophyte, and the diploid stage is the spore-producing sporophyte. Today, most plants grow from seeds and produce flowers and fruit; such plants are called angiosperms. Angiosperms begin as seeds—structures consisting of a protective seed coat, a nutrient...
