Repeated Application

Repeated application is the mathematical process of using the same function, operation, or transformation multiple times, with each result becoming the input for the next step. For a function f, n applications are represented by the iterate fⁿ(x) = f(f(...f(x)...)), where the notation denotes composition rather than ordinary exponentiation. Studying these iterations reveals whether sequences converge to fixed points, enter cycles, grow, or decay. Repeated application supports recurrence relations, dynamical systems, numerical algorithms, and computational modeling, helping researchers analyze long-term behavior from simple rules and initial conditions.

Within-subjects Repeated-measures Design

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University A within-subjects, or repeated-measures, design is an experimental design where all the participants receive every level of the treatment, i.e., every independent variable. For example, in a candy taste test, the researcher would want every participant to taste and rate each type of candy. This video demonstrates a within-subjects experiment (i.e., one where there is an independent variable with...

Infinitely Repeated Games

An infinitely repeated game is a scenario where players repeatedly engage in the same game without a predetermined end. This concept is crucial in understanding long-term interactions in various fields of the social sciences, including economics and international relations. Examples: Firms Setting Prices: Companies continuously adjust prices. Trade Negotiations: Countries consistently negotiate trade terms. Tit-for-Tat Strategy Cooperative Start: Players begin with a cooperative action,...

Repeated games are scenarios where the same game is played multiple times by the same participants. These games are fundamental in understanding how decision-making processes evolve over time. Finitely Repeated Games: These games occur a specific number of times. Consider two software firms that are in competition, releasing updates to their software every quarter. Each quarter, these firms must decide on their strategic approach: they can either invest heavily in developing innovative new...

The goal of this article is to describe a refined method of intubation of the laboratory mouse. The method is noninvasive and, therefore, ideal for studies that require serial monitoring of respiratory function and/or instillation of treatments into the lung.

Memory Development: Demonstrating How Repeated Questioning Leads to False Memories

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville A person is defined as a unique individual based on the people and events they encounter in their lives. Thus, creating, storing, and recalling memories are essential elements of the human experience. However, memory, as adults experience it, takes time to develop. Although young children can learn facts and remember details of their lives from moment-to-moment and day-to-day, they do not create...
