Zeno Paradox

The Zeno paradox is a family of philosophical arguments that challenge the possibility of motion, change, and plurality by exposing apparent contradictions in continuous space and time. In the most familiar form, reaching a destination requires first traveling half the distance, then half of what remains, producing infinitely many stages; mathematical analysis resolves this tension by showing that an infinite sequence of decreasing intervals can have a finite sum and converge to a limit. The paradox helped motivate rigorous treatments of infinity, continuity, limits, and convergent series, making it relevant to calculus, mathematical foundations, and continuing discussions about the relationship between mathematics and physical reality.

The Paradox of Thrift

2025

The paradox of thrift occurs when many people attempt to save more money simultaneously, but instead of increasing total savings in the economy, it can result in maintaining or even reducing overall savings. For a single household, saving more by cutting back on spending makes perfect sense. However, when many households do this simultaneously, the effect on the broader economy can be quite different. When spending drops across the board, businesses sell fewer products and provide fewer services.

A Leasing Paradox

The leasing paradox is critical in financial decision-making, illustrating how lease agreements can produce conflicting outcomes for the parties involved. It underscores the complexities of lease structuring and highlights the role of tax dynamics in achieving equitable contracts. The paradox occurs when a lease's Net Present Value or NPV is positive for one party while being negative for the other, leading to a win-lose outcome. For the lessee, the NPV reflects the cost of purchasing an asset...

Stereotype Threat and Self-fulfilling Prophecies

2020

When we hold a stereotype about a person, we have expectations that he or she will fulfill that stereotype. A self-fulfilling prophecy is an expectation held by a person that alters his or her behavior in a way that tends to make it true. When we hold stereotypes about a person, we tend to treat the person according to our expectations. This treatment can influence the person to act according to our stereotypic expectations, thus confirming our stereotypic beliefs. Research by Rosenthal and...

Cardiac Exam III: Abnormal Heart Sounds

Source: Suneel Dhand, MD, Attending Physician, Internal Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Having a fundamental understanding of normal heart sounds is the first step toward distinguishing the normal from the abnormal. Murmurs are sounds that represent turbulent and abnormal blood flow across a heart valve. They are caused either by stenosis (valve area too narrow) or regurgitation (backflow of blood across the valve) and are commonly heard as a "swishing" sound during auscultation.

2013

Untargeted metabolomics provides a hypothesis generating snapshot of a metabolic profile. This protocol will demonstrate the extraction and analysis of metabolites from cells, serum, or tissue. A range of metabolites are surveyed using liquid-liquid phase extraction, microflow ultraperformance liquid chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-HRMS) coupled to differential analysis software.
