Accommodative Assessment

Accommodative assessment is the clinical evaluation of the eye’s ability to focus clearly at different viewing distances, an essential component of visual function. When a person shifts attention from far to near, ciliary muscle contraction relaxes the zonular fibers, allowing the crystalline lens to become more curved and increase its refractive power; clinicians measure this response through tests of amplitude, facility, and accuracy. In medicine and eye care, these assessments help identify accommodative insufficiency, excess, or inflexibility that may contribute to blurred near vision, eyestrain, or reading difficulty. Findings can guide optical correction, vision therapy, and evaluation of age-related changes such as presbyopia.

The low-energy water-accommodated fraction (LEWAF) of crude oil is a challenging system to analyze, because over time, this complex mixture undergoes chemical transformations. This protocol illustrates methods for the preparation of the LEWAF sample and for performing photo-irradiation and chemical analysis by trapped ion mobility spectrometry–FT-ICR MS.

Simulating the Mechanics of Lens Accommodation via a Manual Lens Stretcher

We present an efficient method of studying lens accommodation by using a manual lens stretcher. The protocol mimics physiological accommodation by pulling the zonules connected around the lens capsule, thereby, stretching the lens.

VisualEyes2020 (VE2020) is a custom scripting language that presents, records, and synchronizes visual eye movement stimuli. VE2020 provides stimuli for conjugate eye movements (saccades and smooth pursuit), disconjugate eye movements (vergence), accommodation, and combinations of each. Two analysis programs unify the data processing from the eye tracking and accommodation recording systems.

2013

There has been renewed interest in developing polymer valves. Here, the objectives are to demonstrate the feasibility of modifying a commercial pulse duplicator to accommodate tri-leaflet geometries and to define a protocol to present polymer valve hydrodynamic data in comparison to native and prosthetic valve data collected under near-identical conditions.
