Bacterial Composition

Bacterial composition refers to the types, proportions, and structural or chemical components that characterize bacterial cells and communities, making it important for understanding infection, health, and treatment response. At the cellular level, features such as the cell envelope, cytoplasm, genetic material, ribosomes, and metabolic products support growth and shape interactions with the host; at the community level, relative abundance and diversity influence collective function. In medicine, analyzing bacterial composition helps identify pathogens, distinguish normal microbiota from dysbiosis, and clarify how bacteria contribute to disease. These insights support clinical diagnostics, antimicrobial selection, microbiome research, and the development of targeted therapies.

The bacterial cell wall is composed of peptidoglycan, a macromolecular network of sugar strands crosslinked by peptides. Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography provides high resolution and throughput for novel discoveries of peptidoglycan composition. We present a procedure for the isolation of cell walls (sacculi) and their subsequent preparation for analysis via UPLC.

We present a novel method of manufacturing rigid and robust short natural fiber preforms using a papermaking process. Bacterial cellulose acts simultaneously as the binder for the loose fibers and provides rigidity to the fiber preforms. These preforms can be infused with a resin to produce truly green hierarchical composites.

Classifying Matter by Composition

2020

Matter: Pure Substances and Mixtures According to its composition, the matter can be classified into two broad categories — pure substances and mixtures. A pure substance is a form of matter that has a constant composition throughout with uniform properties. For example, any sample of sucrose has the same composition and same physical properties, such as melting point, color, and sweetness, regardless of the source from which it is isolated. A mixture is composed of two or more types of...
