Bladder Neck Dissection

Bladder neck dissection is a surgical technique that separates the bladder neck from adjacent tissues to expose or remove structures while protecting urinary function. During procedures such as radical prostatectomy, the surgeon identifies the bladder neck and carefully divides its surrounding tissue planes, maintaining orientation near the ureteral orifices and preserving viable bladder and urethral tissue when possible. This controlled dissection supports specimen removal, reconstruction of the vesicourethral connection, and management of disease involving the prostate or bladder outlet. Mastery of the anatomy and tissue planes helps reduce complications such as bleeding, ureteral injury, leakage, and postoperative urinary dysfunction.

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA Examination of the neck can be a challenge because of the many bones, joints, and ligaments that make up the underlying cervical spine. The cervical spine is composed of seven vertebrae stacked in gentle C-shaped curve. The anterior part of each vertebra is made up of the thick bony body, which is linked to the body above and below by intervertebral discs. These discs help provide stability and shock absorption to the...
