Achalasia Treatment

Achalasia treatment comprises therapies that relieve impaired passage of food from the esophagus into the stomach in people with achalasia, a disorder marked by failed lower esophageal sphincter relaxation and absent or weakened peristalsis. Because medication cannot restore normal nerve function, treatment lowers sphincter resistance through pneumatic dilation, laparoscopic Heller myotomy, or peroral endoscopic myotomy, while botulinum toxin injection or medicines may provide temporary relief for selected patients. These approaches can reduce dysphagia, regurgitation, and chest discomfort, improve nutritional status, and limit esophageal dilation. Treatment selection depends on disease subtype, patient health, procedural risk, and long-term symptom control.

Esophageal achalasia is a chronic neurogenic disorder characterized by impaired relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and absent or ineffective peristalsis in the distal esophagus. This leads to a functional obstruction without a physical blockage, despite significant disruption of esophageal motility.EtiologyAchalasia is caused by degeneration of the myenteric (Auerbach's) plexus, specifically the loss of inhibitory ganglion cells that produce vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)...
