Bone Block Harvesting

Bone block harvesting is a surgical technique for obtaining a solid segment of a patient’s own bone to reconstruct areas with insufficient skeletal volume. Surgeons create controlled osteotomies at a suitable donor site, mobilize a cortical or corticocancellous bone block, and secure it at the recipient site, where revascularization and remodeling support integration with surrounding tissue. In medicine, particularly oral and maxillofacial surgery, the procedure can restore deficient jaw anatomy, provide structural support for dental implants, and improve reconstruction of traumatic or disease-related bone loss. Careful donor-site selection, fixation, and management of healing are essential to achieve predictable outcomes.

Burch in their book The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique. The 3 R's are replacement, reduction, and refinement of the use of animals in research. The use of cell lines and tissue cultures that originated from research animals is a replacement technique, as it allows for many experiments to be conducted in vitro. Harvesting...

In this study, we describe an improved protocol for a multiplexed high-throughput antibody microarray with lectin detection method that can be used in glycosylation profiling of specific proteins. This protocol features new reliable reagents and significantly reduces the time, cost, and lab equipment requirements as compared to the previous procedure.

University of Notre Dame, IN Many animal experiments rely on final data collection time points that are gathered from the harvesting and testing of organs and tissues. The use of appropriate methods for the collection of organs and tissues can impact the quality of the samples and the analysis of the data that is gleaned for the testing of the tissues. The method of euthanasia of the animal can also impact the quality of...
