Embryo Quality

Embryo quality is an assessment of an embryo’s developmental characteristics and potential for successful implantation, primarily used in assisted reproductive medicine. In vitro fertilization laboratories evaluate features such as cell number, symmetry, fragmentation, cleavage timing, blastocyst expansion, and the appearance of the inner cell mass and trophectoderm through microscopic or time-lapse observation. These measurements support decisions about embryo selection, cryopreservation, and transfer, with the goal of improving treatment efficiency and reproductive outcomes. However, morphology reflects developmental potential rather than a definitive diagnosis of chromosomal or genetic health, so embryo quality is interpreted alongside patient factors and, when appropriate, genetic testing.

This video describes how to perform microinjections that deliver reagents into live Drosophila embryos. Researchers can use this method to introduce exogenous compounds like nucleic acids and proteins during the early stages of embryo development. The featured protocol demonstrates how to set up and perform the procedure for injection of any soluble reagent–here, a fluorescent protein for live imaging experiments.

Preimplantation embryos may be cryopreserved after placement into a hypertonic cryoprotective solution to cause cellular dehydration. After equilibration, ice crystal formation is induced in the solution surrounding the embryo. Further dehydration occurs as the embryo is slowly cooled to subzero temperatures before plunging into liquid nitrogen for storage.
