Chick Heart Assay

The chick heart assay is an experimental method that uses embryonic chicken hearts to study cardiac development, function, and responses to experimental treatments. In an ex vivo preparation, hearts are isolated from developing embryos, maintained under controlled culture conditions, and assessed through observable features such as spontaneous contraction, beating rate, rhythm, and structural changes. This assay provides a practical model for investigating cardiotoxicity, developmental abnormalities, and drug effects before advancing to more complex systems. In medicine and pharmacology, it can help characterize cardiac responses while reducing reliance on mammalian models and supporting research into heart development and disease mechanisms.

The chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) is a unique, naturally immunodeficient supportive culture environment to study angiogenesis and tumorigenesis. This video article demonstrates the different steps in chick ex ovo culture, application of potentially angiogenic substances and successful inoculation of tumor cells and tissues on the surface of the CAM.

Neural induction is the first step in the formation of the brain. It is a mechanism by which Hensen's node (organizer), instructs adjacent tissue to adopt a neural fate, i.e. to give rise to the nervous system. This video demonstrates an assay for neural induction in chick embryo.

The chicken embryo (Gallus gallus domesticus) provides an economical and accessible model for developmental biology research. Chicks develop rapidly and are amenable to genetic and physiological manipulations, allowing researchers to investigate developmental pathways down to the cell and molecular levels. This video review of chick development begins by describing the process of egg fertilization and formation within the chicken reproductive tract. Next, the most commonly used chick staging...

An Introduction to the Chick: Gallus gallus domesticus

The chicken embryo (Gallus gallus domesticus) is an extremely valuable model organism for research in developmental biology, in part because most of their development takes place within an egg that is incubated outside of the mother. As a result, early developmental stages can be accessed, visualized and manipulated by simply creating a small hole in the eggshell. Since billions of chickens are raised worldwide for meat and egg production, scientists can easily and economically acquire large...
